Deze week heeft Google een nieuw product bekendgemaakt - App Inventor. Een omgeving waar een niet-programmeur programma’s kan maken voor Android.
Men kiest uit een menu programma onderdelen en sleept deze bij elkaar om een programma te maken.
Tijdens de proefperiode hebben scholieren al verschillende programma’s gemaakt bijvoorbeeld een applicatie die als je aan het rijden bent en een bericht (sms) ontvangt, automatisch terug sms’te dat je aan het rijden bent en later terug zal sms’n.
Deze tool van Google zal Android toegankelijker maken voor vele en een ware vloed aan Android applicaties opgang brengen. Nu kunnen ‘gewone’ burgers met hun Android telefoon prutsen en pielen zoals ze dat vroeger deden met hun PC.
MAAR echt interessant is dat Android niet puur een telefoon besturingssyteem is. Voor het eind van dit jaar staat Android, naast in je telefoon ook in auto’s, netbooks, magnetron’s en wasmachines, tablets en TV’s. WOW.
Stel je eens voor. Je kunt je TV aanpassen naar wens, programma’s (applicaties) voor je TV maken, programma’s maken voor je auto (uhh?!), je wasmachine via je telefoon aanzetten of de magnetron bedienen vanuit je luie stoel.
App inventor is een bijzonder interessant product – deel van een goed uitgekiende strategie met een grote impact.
Google past de advertenties die je rond het web ziet aan op basis van je gedrag – zgn ‘behavioral targeting‘. Als je een paar keer gezocht hebt op hypotheken zul je zien dat er op sites waar Adsense gebruikt wordt meer advertenties staan van hypotheek aanbieders. Als je Gmail gebruikt kun je ook zien dat de advertenties die daar getoond worden soms gebaseerd zijn op de mail die je ontvangen hebt.
Aan de ene kant best gaaf – persoonlijke advertenties (beter dan die deur aan deur rommel die je elke week ontvangt) – en aan de andere kant misschien eng. Google weet precies wat je online doet, waar je naar kijkt, hoe lang, waar je op klikt, welke video’s je bekijkt etc.
Google heeft een optie om aan te geven wat je interesses zijn. Google gebruikt dan deze interesses om de advertenties die je via Google Search en Adsense krijgt beter af te stemmen op je interesses. Read more…
Eye tracking is overrated. Experts want you to believe that using eye tracking you are guaranteed of amazing conversion ratio’s and that simply is not true.
Eye tracking should not be taken as seriously
Nobody can guarantee conversion, just lik no one can guarantee anything is search engine optimization.
Eye tracking can be an indication, or perhaps a slight clue as to what uses might do, but out there in the real world users behave different than in the UX lab. Users are in a hurry, are angry, are tired or just had a really good experience on the site of you competitor.
We need more performance based design. Design stuff with common sense, craftmanship and based on proven experience and the TEST. No not in a lab, in the real world, release early and often. Measure, analyze, modify and measure again. That’s the only way to the top. A/B tests & multivariate tests are your best friends.
Oh – and never stop testing. No website is ever finished. If it is, it should be taken offline and deleted.
So – had to get that of my chest ;)
Augmented reality on mobile phone is not adding any real value to the whole experience.
Lets look at Layar. The AR (augmented reality) view looks like this:

Now you imagine you are using this, trying to find a house you might be interested in. It’s very difficult selecting a house because the motion sensors of the phone are quire sensitive causing the icons to move around like mad. Using the map view – which is also available is MUCH better. That’s the interface that fits the purpose of finding a house much better than looking through a camera.
But – now with the 3D capability AR actually gets interesting – check out this view:

This building is not yet built, but you can now PREVIEW it on it’s actual location, walk through it as if it were there – whilst walking through the grass of the construction site. THIS is a great application of AR.
So no. I see a really bright future for AR.

Nou misschien niet helemaal, maar in het gaat dit jaar snel gaan met dit locatie gebaseerd spel en sociaal platform.
We houden bij theFactor.e Foursquare al een tijd in de gaten. Het lijk nu ook echt in Nederland voet aan de grond te krijgen – en niet meer alleen in Amsterdam.

the San Diego zoo is accesible via Google Maps.
It’s clear that the technology Google uses does not quite scale (yet?) to smaller spaces. The user experience is quite different compared to normal Google Maps.

De consequentie hiervan: wow. Terminator meets Borne Identity en dan echt.
Overal zie ik tekenen van deze technologie. Er komt een trend op gang.
Augmentend of beter gezegd – annotated reality – dat wordt de technologie van deze decade en de gevolgen hiervan zullen enorm zijn. Groter dan de gevolgen van de mobiele telefoon.
